The Schoharie County Historical Society took the Dutch Reformed church that rises up above the Fox Creek, and created a museum in 1889, full of an eclectic mix of artifacts. Some of the objects that were first exhibited over 120 years ago are still to be enjoyed today. The church, built in 1772, was turned into the Lower Fort in 1777 after the local militia and a Continental cavalry troop put down an uprising of loyalist Americans and Indians. It was attacked by British forces in 1780 and a cannonball hole is still visible. The fort returned to religious use after the war and then served again as a militia headquarters during the Civil War. The first floor of the museum tells the military history of the Fort and the second floor is a Victorian-style "museum of a museum". The rest of the Old Stone Fort Museum complex is across the street and consists of: -The Badgley Annex built in 1972 which features a 1903 Rambler automobile. -The Warner House circa 1830, housing the Scribner's Exibit of 20th century communications technology. -The 1830 Jackson Law Office includeing a 1925 voting booth. -The Lacko Barn circa 1860. -The 1863 Oliver Schoolhouse portrays a classroom of a hundred years ago. -The Hartmann's Dorf Palatine House circa 1700's, currently undergoing restoration. -Shaeffer Ingold Dutch Barn circa 1700's, filled with 18th and 19th century tools and agricultural implements.

Schoharie Valley Railroad Museum
Depot Lane
Schoharie , NY 12157

518-827-4680
www.midtel.com/~scha/RailroadsMuseum.htm
The museum contains items pertinent to the operation of a railroad, particularly those connected with the SVRR and the Delaware and Hudson R.R. There are several rail cars on the premises, including an historic D&H caboose, and a combine from the Middleburgh & Schoharie Railroad, which have been restored. You can also view old photos of the yard, buildings and steam engines from the SVRR and the Middleburgh & Schoharie Railroad, which connected to our line. Both ran thru the valley and met the D&H line to Albany. The buildings, which have not been in use since the demise of the railroad, consist of a station house, freight house/engine house, weigh station, creamery and old mill. Most rail yards did not preserve these artifacts, and the few that are still around are disappearing at an alarming rate. Rail fans all over this country are scrambling to record these structures in photos, but we are determined to maintain and save our precious history. This site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Open Saturday & Sunday from Memorial Day thru Columbus Day, 12-4 p.m.
